Downtown residents and office workers plan ahead, if you haven’t already. The Dearborn Street bridge will be closed to all traffic starting today through next Monday, June 30, so crews can do work on the Chicago Riverwalk.

That work includes building under-bridge walkway connections that will entail lifting and lowering the bridge several times during that span. According to the Chicago Department of Transportation, all traffic will be detoured west on Wacker Drive, north on La Salle Street and east on Illinois Street to Dearborn.

CDOT will close the State Street Bridge in mid-July for more Riverwalk work, although the dates haven’t been announced. Mayor Emanuel announced the Riverwalk redevelopment plan in October 2012, and called the Chicago River “our second shoreline, which has played such a critical role in Chicago’s early history, the development of our industry and our quality of life.” The project is being partially funded with a $100 million federal loan.
