At Story Lab, anyone can be a storyteller. The line between audience and performer is nearly non-existent at this unique live lit event, with chairs circling a fireplace “stage” in the back of Black Rock Pub and no sound equipment in sight. This leads to an intimate and supportive environment for the many first-time storytellers who grace the venue.

It’s exactly what Scott Whitehair had in mind when he set out to create Story Lab three years ago. While hosting his other live lit show, This Much Is True, he was approached by many audience members who had an interest in taking part, more people than the show could accommodate. To fill that need, Whitehair says, “Story Lab was created as a place for people interested in telling their own stories.”

People sure want to tell their own stories. Story Lab has brought to the stage over 250 storytellers and counting. Fortunately for the audience the performers generally aren’t trembling, uncertain newbies. These are people who are ready for their moment. It helps that Whitehair takes the time to practice and prep with them beforehand.

“I want people to tell the story they are most excited to tell a room of people,” says Whitehair. What he doesn’t want is to channel his intrepid storytellers into presenting similarly themed voices. By bringing in newcomers instead of a rotation of regulars, he says, “You’re bringing in this new energy. That really excites me as a storyteller.”

Story Lab can be found at Black Rock Pub the third Wednesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. Come early for a good seat in front of the fireplace.
