We weren’t exactly shy when we related our enjoyment of MCA Chicago’s recent Frida Kahlo exhibit, Unbound. It elegantly discusses hot button societal issues through striking visuals rather than mountains of words. While discussions of gender performance, national identity and politics can quickly become heated and vitriolic, leaving the original point behind, a walk through Unbound presents the same topics silently, but boldly. You as the observer can then be affected more purely and come to your own conclusions. This was something we found refreshing, and we encourage a stroll through the exhibit for this very reason.
But whether you’ve had the chance to explore Unbound or not, we have a related recommendation to make. Fans of Frida and art enthusiasts alike should check out So You Think You Know Frida Kahlo from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. this Saturday, June 28. The talk will be led by Hayden Herrera, who is a longstanding name in the art world. She’s an art historian, Guggenheim fellow, and has written two separate works on Frida Kahlo and her art. She’ll be discussing the artist’s life with a special focus on her legacy, using examples from the current exhibition.
Also speaking at the event will be Doug Ischar, a current Associate Professor of Photography at UIC whose body of work can be seen all over the world, and author Debra N. Mancoff, a Northwestern doctorate alum whose works specialize on the intersection of art, fashion and culture.
We found Unbound to be a show that really opens itself up for discussion, and we think this talk will definitely be worth checking out. You can find more information and tickets here.
