The Blackhawks announced today they have agreed to terms with captain Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane on eight-year contract extensions that will run through the 2022-23 season. The extension will start after with the 2015-16 season.
Together they have won two Stanley Cups and made the Hawks perennial contenders since coming into the league in the 2007-08 season. Toews was named the team's captain in 2008 and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP during the championship run in 2010.
Kane meanwhile has gained a reputation as an elite goal scorer and clutch performer, matching Toews with a Conn Smythe Trophy of his own in 2013.
Early terms of the deals, as reported by Derren Dreger of TSN, are worth $10.5 million on average per year, making them both the highest paid players in the league. Each deal is worth $84 million through the length of the contract. The Blackhawks have now secured the cornerstones of their franchise and will look to compete for the Stanley Cup for years to come.
