Chicago Police are questioning a person of interest in connection with the shooting death of Shamiya Adams last weekend. The 11-year-old was at a sleepover Friday night on the 3900 block of West Gladys Avenue in Garfield Park when she a stray bullet that went through a window and hit Adams in the head. Adams was placed on a respirator at Mt. Sinai Hospital and died hours later.

Adams’ death spurred community leaders and Mayor Rahm Emanuel to hold a summit on finding ways to curb the shootings and violence happening across Chicago’s South and West sides. Emanuel has visited Adams’ family twice since her death and there is an $8,000 reward for information leading to finding her killer.

Neither the mayor’s office nor the Police Department would confirm someone is in custody. Sharonda Jones, Adams’ best friend, said she wants the killer found. Adams’ cousin, Jarias Boose, said Adams loved to dance and sing, and eat pizza. “When we had pizza, she’d have more pizza than me.”
