Jake Arrieta has been the Cubs' best starting pitcher since the club traded Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to Oakland last month. The law of averages held that Arrieta was ready for a comedown and that happened at Coors Field Wednesday night. Arrieta allowed nine runs on 13 hits in five innings. Seven of those hits came in succession during a brutal sixth inning, including a two-run homer by Carlos Gonzalez. Before Wednesday, Arrieta had 10 straight quality starts.

Leftfielder Chris Coghlan was a bright spot for the Cubs. Batting leadoff, Coghlan was 3-for-3 with an RBI and was a homer short of hitting for the cycle.Arismendy Alcantara hit a two-run homer and Anthony Rizzo had an RBI for the Cubs. Javier Baez had another rough night at the plate with an 0-for-4 night.
