Making Preseason Bearable: Bears News And Notes

By Rob Winn in News on Aug 14, 2014 6:00PM

2014_03_bears_logo.jpg The Bears head into their second preseason game with most of the offense firmly entrenched, but plenty of questions surrounding the defense and special teams. For the most part, the first team offense picked up right where they left off last year, scoring with ease. And while the defense showed improvement from the pass rush, there were plenty of miscues from the linebackers and secondary.

Now that training camp is over and the only preseason game that matters (relatively) coming next week, the Bears hope to answer a few questions when they face the Jacksonville Jaguars at Soldier Field tonight.

Back-Up QB Battle
In a change from last week, Jimmy Clausen will take over the offense after Jay Cutler comes out. Clausen had a solid outing in the first preseason game, throwing for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Even though Jordan Palmer had decent numbers with against the Eagles, Clausen is in the driver's seat for the back-up job. Given his command of the offense and NFL experience, a good outing from Clausen will most likely solidify him as the second QB.

Defense Dunces
Aside from Lance Briggs, the linebackers left a lot to be desired last week. Second year player Jon Bostic seemed out of sorts in his play, jumping in the wrong direction and getting burned several times. Also, in his first game action since switching positions, Shea McClellin looked lost during most of last week's game. One lasting image was of McClellin falling down while one Eagle ran by. Earlier this week linebackers coach Reggie Herring came out in support of McClellin, but if his play continues to be sub par the Bears can't afford to have him on the roster simply because he was a former first round pick. You have to wonder if general manager Phil Emery will cut McClellin if his play doesn't improve.

Preseason Debuts
Several key players are set to start after missing the first preseason game. Offensive lineman Kyle Long and tight end Martellus Bennett will get their first action. Bears fans will get their first look at Jared Allen after he missed the game against the Eagles when his wife gave birth. Cornerback Tim Jennings is questionable after practicing all week, but missing significant time with a quad injury throughout training camp. Also, it's doubtful that punching bag Chris Conte makes his debut, since he just started practicing on Sunday.

Looking ahead to the only real test in the third preseason against Seattle, hopefully solid play from back ups and a glitch-free telecast will make this game a little more watchable
