So, uh, yeah, it's not often we look for a lede to introduce you to a band that actually only existed for a pair of 7-inch records in the late 70s, but here we are. X_X (pronounced ex blank ex, because we don't want you to look like a dummy when hipping your friends to the band) was and now is again led by John Morton of Electric Eels and they're touring behind a just-released career retrospective. Yeah, back to that pair of singles thing? The compilation they put out has all that stuff including some live tracks and other ephemera. Why should you care? Because, as the tune below proves, this was a hard charging, angry and electric band of punks rooted in the aesthetic of new wave while also tearing the crap out of their amps.

Grab your earplugs and batten down the hatches: prepare for a full onslaught of X_X tonight.

X_X plays tonight, Thursday, Aug. 21, at The Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western, 9 p.m., $10, 21+
