Vulgar Display Of Football: Seahawks Trounce Bears, 34-6

The good news here is that this is the preseason, when wins and losses don't count here. The bad news? lf last night's 34-6 preseason loss to the Seahawks is any indication of what to expect from Chicago football, then Bears fans appear to be in for a long, long season.

The Chicago Tribune went even so far as to call the loss to the Seahawks "disturbing," akin to a lack of faith in the Force. Of course, they were taking on defending Super Bowl champions, so perhaps some slack should be cut there. But any way you cut it indeed, the Seahawks put on a vulgar display of football against the Monsters of the Midway.

At halftime, the Bears appeared well on their way to what would have been their first preseason shutout since 1981. Luckily, they at least managed two field goals in the fourth quarter. Take your bright spots where you can get them.

But otherwise?

The Bears surrendered four touchdowns to the Seahawks' starting offense on its first four possessions. And the fifth and final one of the half ended with a 59-yard field goal because there wasn't any more time to advance the ball.

The Bears offense wasn't much better, with Jay Cutler and company blowing key opportunities to score, including in the second quarter, when Cutler was intercepted at the goal line. [You can read about the slapdash chain of events leading up to that play at ESPN.]

Even bright spots were tempered by bad news. Safety Chris Conte, for instance, played well, but suffered a concussion in the third quarter.

Bears fans have very little to celebrate if the team is to indeed be a playoff contender.

As Hub Arkush noted, "it’s impossible to make a glass half full argument about this one," also adding that the Bears " come home from Seattle having raised far more questions than they answered."

They'll have one more chance to answer their doubters this coming Thursday against the Browns.
