The Active Transportation Alliance’s Four Star Bike and Chow still maintains the exploratory spirit of the ride that preceded it, the Boulevard Lakefront Tour. This year’s ride on Sept. 7 says goodbye to the North Side neighborhoods and North Shore suburbs and hello to points south of Madison Street. I, for one, couldn’t be more excited.
Four different routes, ranging from a 12-mile scramble to a 62-mile ride, will bring bicyclists up close and personal with the South and Southwest Sides. The 62-mile route will take riders through Bridgeport, New City and West Lawn into Morgan Park, Beverly, Calumet Park, Pullman and West Pullman, and Hegewisch, before venturing back north through South Shore, Hyde Park, Kenmore, Bronzeville and Chinatown. The ride ends where it starts at UIC, where plenty of food and entertainment await.
Regardless of what route you choose, plenty of food will be available at designated rest stops. Bridgeport Pasty and Nana will have noshes for the 12-mile and 22-mile riders, while Pierogi Wagon, DonerMen, New Furama and Phoenix will have sustenance ready in Pullman, the Chicago Velo Campus, and Ping Tom Park, respectively.
Online registration for this year’s Four Star Bike and Chow is ongoing, but will close at noon, Sept. 6. The ride begins at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s East Campus at Taylor and Morgan Streets.
