Center On Halsted To Host LGBTQ Youth Job Fair Oct. 22

Lakeview's Center on Halsted will host a job fair aimed specifically for employment opportunities for the city's LGBTQ youth on Oct. 22.

The fair, Work Chicago!, takes place at the center from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., and is sponsored by newspaper Windy City Times, and advocacy organizations Chicago House TransWorks and TransTech, respectively. The last two organizations will be offering job training and support prior to the job fair itself, according to a news release.

Chicago House's job-readiness training—which will feature one-on-one guidance on transitioning and best practices, interview skills, and resume writing, amongst other essential career skills—takes place Oct. 9-10, then Oct. 13-14. To participate, though, job seekers must call the Chicago House employment program. That's the number at the bottom of this web page, extension 109.

The job fair itself is a response to a youth summit about LGBTQ homelessness back in May, wherein many participants said they couldn't find jobs where they felt comfortable. [You can read more about that summit here.] Transgender workers are particularly vulnerable to workplace discrimination and unemployment.
