A Northwest Side man with a history of mental illness was charged Monday night with the brutal stabbing deaths of his longtime girlfriend and their 7-year-old daughter. Maciej Kotlinski, 35, is expected to be arraigned in court Tuesday. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder after his girlfriend Ania Kosinska, 34, and their daughter Viktoria Kotlinski, 7, were found in their home on the 3400 block of North Odell over the weekend, each with several stab and slash wounds on their bodies. Investigators theorize that Kotlinski tried to decapitate Kosinska and their daughter.

Chicago Police were alerted to the situation by Waukegan Police after Kotlinski arrived at his father’s home, with his 5-year-old daughter by Kosinska in tow, and told him about the murders. Kotlinski’s father called Waukegan Police, who arrived to find Kotlinski with a knife to his own throat. Police Tasered Kotlinski twice to subdue him.

Anonymous friends of Kotlinski and Kosinska told the Tribune the couple had a tumultuous relationship aggravated by Kotlinski’s mental issues and temper. Chicago police also found a dog and cat in the home, apparently stabbed to death.
