APPetizing: Log Your Whiskey Adventures With Distilld

Distilld is an app that aims to be the best companion for whiskey sippers. It’s the brainchild of Stu Grubbs, who lives in Chicago and came up with the idea for the app when he was just a fledgling whiskey drinker, wanting a great way to track what he did and didn’t like.

The app can scan your whiskey (or rye, scotch, or moonshine) labels or if the label isn’t easily accessible or it’s too dark you can search by name. Once you have the right whiskey to log, you can rate it from 1 to 5 stars. But no rating is set in stone. If you decide later that a whiskey you once thought was top notch actually isn’t that great, each time you log your drinking you can choose a different rating.

You can also log them into your personal cabinet or wishlist, as well as explore a distillery’s different offerings. You can also follow your friends and favorite drinkers to see what whiskeys they are imbibing. Once they get enough whiskey logs, the Distilld team will release their recommendation feature. Right now the app is just for Iphone, but they are planning on releasing an Android version soon.

I’ll be the first to admit I’m a beginner at drinking whiskey and I’m not sure which kinds I like and don’t like yet. I’ve been using the app since it’s release and it’s been a great way to keep track of my favorites and least favorites. Good whiskey ain’t cheap and the recommendation feature will be extremely welcome. In the meantime, you can scan while at the store and see reviews and check-ins for whiskeys you are considering purchasing.

As the number of new whiskey drinkers grows (women are a large sector of growth), demand for anything that makes whiskey more accessible like whiskey-related apps is also likely to grow.
