CTU Presser Offers Few Details On Lewis' Health

Anyone hoping for what specifically is ailing Karen Lewis will be disappointed in the news conference Chicago Teachers Union held this afternoon outside their Merchandise Mart headquarters.

Lewis, who has been hospitalized since Sunday after becoming light-headed at a public appearance, had emergency surgery Wednesday for a separate ailment. What Lewis is suffering from is a source of speculation, given her public persona and her exploration of a mayoral run against Rahm Emanuel next year.

While Lewis recovers, union vice president Jesse Sharkey will assume leadership duties. Sharkey would not elaborate on how long Lewis needs to fully recover, but did mention that she is alert and responsive
