Alan Cumming is known as one of the finer actors of our time, commanding the screen and the stage to portray a diverse range of characters from Shakespearean roles to Eli Gold on television’s The Good Wife. Beyond his unflinching acting ability, he has also met prolific success as an author, demonstrated again with his newly-released memoir, Not My Father’s Son. This project was born after he appeared on a popular celebrity genealogy show and was driven to learn and understand more about the mystery, darkness and light that swirled about his family.

The writing is masterful and lyrical as it unwinds a tale of growing up in a house with an oppressive father who ruled the home and family. Harrowing and heartfelt, this memoir feels like a journey, and the reader is right there with him remembering so much and uncovering that which had been covered for so long. Cumming sees the light in the darkness that often resided over his family and we also learn a lot along the way about memory, time, acceptance and renewal.
