Six people were seriously injured and another 20 suffered minor injuries when a Megabus bound for Chicago rolled over outside Indianapolis. Sean Hughes, spokesman for Megabus’ parent company Coach USA North America, said the bus was en route from Atlanta to Chicago with 56 passengers when the driver overcorrected trying to avoid an accident on Interstate 65 and hit a car around 4:30 a.m. The bus rolled over and avoided sliding into oncoming traffic when it was stopped by guard wire dividing the median.
WGN-TV reports one of the seriously injured passengers had his hand pinned underneath the bus. Passenger Craig Steichen of St. Charles told the Tribune the crash was “like a rollercoaster on a bus.” Another passenger, Devin David of Louisville, Kentucky, was on the second level of the bus sleeping when he felt the bus begin to swerve. “I was able to put my head down and brace myself for impact before it turned over,” he said. Indiana State Police Sgt. Shawn O’Keefe said the driver of the bus didn’t see the accident “because of the rain or something and swerved to avoid it.”
The crash occurred in Greenwood, a suburb of Indianapolis.
