The vermin that normally occupy City Council received an unwanted guest Thursday while the man responsible for keeping pests out of city buildings testified during budget hearings. Fleet and Facilities Management Commissioner David Reynolds, whose job includes pest control for city facilities, became a bit red-faced as a cockroach climbed a wall of the council chambers. Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd), not skipping a beat at the sight of the roach, asked Reynolds, “Commissioner, what is your annual budget for cockroach abatement?”

Reynolds said after his testimony he was “mortified” at the sight of the roach.

“I do take pride in the condition of our facilities. When I get calls or notices that we have issues, I am embarrassed. We very routinely do treatments for cockroaches and other pests. We often just end up chasing them around. This is an old building. Lots of places for them to hide. People eat their lunch…. It’s had lots of people in it. We’re never going to be roach-free. We’ll just manage it the best we can.”
