Rees House Ready To Roll

It’s a jarring sight on Prairie. A massive stone mansion strapped onto what looks like a semi-trailer on steroids. Nope, Optimus Prime isn’t moving; it’s time for the City to shunt the Harriet F. Rees House out of the way of the DePaul Arena and McCormick Place expansion in the South Loop.

Back in March, we told you how the relocation of this gorgeous 1888 home was just the latest chapter in Chicago’s long history of jacking up and moving significant buildings. The main house has been pulled from its foundation, heavily reinforced and set at an angle facing northeast in preparation for Tuesday’s slow journey one block north to be reunited with its coach house which was safely moved last month.
