Archbishop Blase Cupich will become a cardinal one day, just not now. Cupich’s name was not on a list of 15 new cardinals named Sunday by Pope Francis. The Archdiocese of Chicago is considered a “cardinal seat” but Cupich was only installed as the leader of Chicago’s Catholic Church in November and had he been named a cardinal by Pope Cool it would have been a head-spinning ascent.

The Archdiocese of Chicago has had a cardinal lead it since George Mundelein in 1924 and Cupich’s predecessor, Francis George, was named a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in January 1998, nine months after he succeeded Joseph Bernadin as leader of the Archdiocese. Let Cupich ease into his new role and he’ll be named in due time.
