So What Was That Liquid That Invaded Union Station Tuesday?

If you were catching a Metra train at Union Station during the evening rush Tuesday you may have been stopped dead in your tracks by an inky substance spreading across the floors after a sprinkler pipe burst in the ceiling.
It was nice to see folks having fun guessing what the substance was. Was it the black oil from The X-Files? Was it the smoke monster from Lost? Was it the Venom Symbiote?
Personally, we're kind of freaked out by the thought of that black muck pouring from Union Station's sprinkler system in the event of a fire. Could it be a byproduct of diesel exhaust from idling trains? If anything, it seems as though that would actually combust if it came into contact with flame. And is this water considered part of Union Station's potable water system? If so, we predict a run on bottled water in the immediate future.
