The eclectic Santa Cruz-based trio, The Devil Makes Three, returns to Chicago Saturday to play House of Blues. Comprised of Pete Bernhard on guitar, Cooper McBean on the tenor banjo and Lucia Turino on upright bass, their sound playfully ebbs between bluegrass, country, metal and punk. They told us via an email interview they love so many different kinds of music that they’ve “become somewhat schizophrenic musically” aiming to perplex and intrigue listeners.

Their diverse origins and constant attraction to different genres adds a momentum to their music and that energy carries over perfectly into their live shows. We asked them where this energy comes from and they said, “We learned all we know about touring and live shows from the punk scene. We always wanted our live shows to have a similar energy. We love playing live and are always trying to capture that sound on our albums. We hope to record yet another live album in the near future to keep that tradition going.”

This infectious energy exists outside of their live shows as they have multiple projects in the works including tribute covers of their musical heroes, demos for a new album, and the creation of a record label.

Saturday night's show at House of Blues will undoubtedly enliven the crowd with their warm, driven, and vital performance. Tickets are still on sale.
