Someone attempted to give Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia an advantage heading into one of the remaining mayoral debates by leaking notes and potential questions for a debate sponsored by ABC 7, Univision and the League of Women Voters to Garcia’s campaign late Tuesday.

A statement from Garcia’s campaign manager Andrew Sharp detailed that a staffer discovered the notes (titled “early thoughts”) and immediately turned them over to campaign counsel Matt Piers. Piers then turned over the document to ABC 7 vice president and news director Jennifer Graves, Univision news director Ted Arvesu and League of Women Voters Executive Director Mary Schaafsma, who informed the campaigns of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Ald. Bob Fioretti, Willie Wilson and William “Dock” Walls of the breach. Sharp noted that Garcia did not see the document.

That didn’t stop the Fioretti campaign from releasing a statement attacking Garcia. Fioretti advisor Michael Kolenc called the breach “the same kind of back-room shenanigans that have put Chicago in the mess we are in now. Mr. Garcia owes Chicagoans an explanation” Sharp countered that Fioretti’s camp is desperate.

"First, Alderman Bob Fioretti stooped to attack the Mayor's son and now he is attacking our campaign for doing the right thing. He clearly doesn't know the difference between right and wrong."
