The lake effect snow was believed to have been a contributing factor in the initial crash at 10:15 a.m. on the southbound lanes near the Ohio Street exit. The resulting chain reaction resulted in a total of 38 vehicles crashing all the way to North Avenue.
Fifteen people were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. As of 1 p.m., the express lanes remain closed. Traffic was being rerouted off the expressway at Armitage and IDOT is working to clear the cars from the expressway.
