February’s cold temperatures and snowfall totals are more than making up for what was a mild January. That said, you may want to pay attention to Thursday’s mercury readings because we could be flirting with the record books once again.

It’s been cold this month, especially overnight, and it’s taken a few layers to even feel mildly uncomfortable even in the backyard some sunrises. Skilling Central’s predicted Thursday overnight low is currently set for minus 6 degrees; the record, set in 1936, is 7 below.

Typically, the average highs and lows are supposed to inch higher as the days get longer. That hasn’t happened this month, even though there’s sunshine in the sky well past 5 p.m. these days. The average low through Monday is 18.5 degrees. The average historic low is 27.7 degrees. All those cold temps keeps the snow on the ground crunchy but frozen, which helps holds the temps below average.

Hopefully, the weather makes a return to normal soon, maybe starting as soon as Friday. Until then, bundle up.
