A handful of Wisconsin car owners had a "shit happens, what can you do?" moment last Friday when an elderly man panicked and lost control of his vehicle, hitting nine cars in a Piggly Wiggly parking lot. Russell Kerr, 92, was pulling out of his parking spot when, according to Mayville, Wisconsin Police Chief Christopher MacNeill, his foot became stuck on the accelerator, the man became confused and then panicked. As seen in the video below, Kerr proceeded to back up his vehicle to exit his spot, but then slammed on the gas, hitting three parked cars. In a panic, he reversed and hit two more vehicles before moving forward again and tearing the front bumper off another parked car. As he drives away he swerves into another truck hard enough to push the vehicle several feet.
"I can tell you in 23 years of law enforcement, I've never seen anything like this,” MacNeill told WISN-TV news. MacNeill was surprised that no one was injured during the situation and thankfully only two of the vehicles were occupied when they were hit. WISN-TV also spoke to Donald Gourlie, who exited the grocery store to find Kerr's car up against his. “What are you going to do? There isn't much you can say. It just happens. I was just glad no one got hurt,” Gourlie said. At the time of the accident, Gourlie was inside the store buying a Valentine's Day card for his wife of 58 years. "I wrote, 'I love you' on the bottom. 'P.S. Sorry about your car,'” Gourlie said.
We're glad someone was able to have a sense of humor about the whole thing. Police stated that Kerr will not face any charges, but a report will be sent to the Department of Motor Vehicles, which will decide if Kerr needs to be retested. We'll venture a guess that no matter what, someone's insurance premium is about to go through the roof. Now, time to queue up some "Yakety Sax" to soundtrack this video and find a little humor in the chaos life doesn't let you control.
