Snow might be on the ground but we've got summer in our mind and hearts, so the seasonal re-opening of a Chicago classic is a sweet reminder that warmer weather will indeed eventually reappear. Winter be damned, there is ice cream to enjoy.
South Side favorite and Chicago staple, the Original Rainbow Cone (9233 S. Western Ave), is crawling out of their winter hibernation and opening doors again for another successful season of slinging their signature treat. Next Saturday, March 7, is the grand date for their re-opening. Doors open at noon and the first 50 people through the line get a free t-shirt. If sweet Chicago pride swag isn't your thing, you can actually pop in the day before, March 6, at noon for the soft opening with less fanfare. All customers who visit between March 6-9 have the chance to win Rainbow Cone prizes, so sounds like a good excuse to bundle up and enjoy some ice cream.
If you aren't familiar with the Rainbow Cone (shame on you!), it's a sliced ice cream cone that wedges together five flavors: chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (New York vanilla with cherry and walnuts), pistachio and orange sherbet. Although the flavors alone are lovely, enjoying them as one sweet treat makes for a delicious flavor combination. So head down Western Ave next weekend, pop on in and enjoy a tasty reminder that soon enough you'll be able to enjoy your Rainbow Cone on the sidewalk under the Chicago summer sun.
