Broken Foot Sidelines White Sox Sale

Baseball in Chicago wouldn't be what it is without something to make fans worry. Keep in mind that rarely are pennants are won in April but the broken foot suffered by White Sox ace Chris Sale does mean the rest of the ballclub's retooled starting rotation will have to be on point in the regular season's opening weeks.

Sale suffered an avulsion fracture on the lateral side of his right foot Friday in an accident at his home in Arizona. Sale compared the injury to an ankle sprain. An avulsion fracture is when a small chunk of bone attached to a tendon or ligament is pulled away from the main part of the bone. Rest and icing the area, and range of motion exercises are the preferred forms of treatment. Sale is expected to miss three weeks, which will mark his return sometime in April, after the regular season begins.

Sale is expected to anchor a reconstituted White Sox rotation along with Jeff Samardzija, Jose Quintana, John Danks and Erik Johnson. Sale has finished in the top six in AL Cy Young Award voting the past three years. [MLB.com]
