Were you one of the many who noticed some seriously Toxic Avenger-grade sludge floating on down the river earlier today?

Have no fear Chicago, according to a city spokesman the bubbling brown sludge seen in the river east of the Michigan Avenue bridge was actually just rust and dirt, caused by storm water runoff.
The “rust” was seen leaking into the river starting at 9 a.m. and early this afternoon the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District said they were investigating the “discoloration”— a generous term, we think— and had no other information to provide, DNAinfo Chicago reports.
Right away, the Chicago Twitter-verse erupted with speculation, wondering “What the hell is that shit?”

@ourmaninchicago @lakeline Awesome to know that some think it looks like a mudslide. Lot of mud around Michigan Ave.

@DNAinfoCHI where else are the Cubs going to empty all those porta-johns? #peegate #pollution

And we really can't get over how spot-on this predictive tweet was, from just two days ago:
#Cubs announce they will be dyeing the Chicago River yellow this year.

Even the Brown Line chimed in:
@redeyechicago It looks like it's trying to steal my spot as Chicago's favorite brown mess.

But let's be honest, it seriously just looks like poop. Possibly baby diarrhea consistency? Or maybe all those "canine fecal surprises" finally made their way over from Mary Bartelme Park?
