The 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck near Kathmandu on Saturday has left Nepal devastated. The death toll has surpassed 3,800, and one million children are in need of humanitarian aid. There have already been 100 aftershocks, some nearly as powerful the quake itself. As expected, international relief efforts are well underway, including a new fund created by the Chicago Nepali community.
Nepali individuals and businesses in the Chicagoland area began to raise funds upon learning of the disaster, even as they struggled to confirm the safety of family members in the affected area. They soon joined together with several key organizations to create the The Fund Raising Committee for Nepal Earthquake Fund. The groups associated include the Chicagoland Nepali Friendship Society; Non-Resident Nepali Association, Illinois Chapter; Chicagoland Tharu Society; Nepali American Center; Newa American Dabu; and the America Nepal Society, as well as many Nepali churches.
Donations to the earthquake fund can be made through Paypal, and you can get more information on the fund at the Chicagoland Nepali Friendship Society website. Committee chairman Sharda Thapa stressed the importance of monetary donations, citing ease of access for those in need. Nepali organizations are also accepting food, clothing, medical supplies and other sundries. Drop-off locations include Curry House Restaurant (899 S State St), Cumin Restaurant (1414 N Milwaukee Ave), and Mt. Everest Restaurant (630 Church St, Evanston).
