In the dead of winter, Chicagoans whisper these precious words to ourselves: "The summer is so beautiful here, the summer will be worth it." It's not just a winter mantra— our summers offer so much to long-suffering residents and lucky visitors alike, from neighborhood festivals to free concert series. And you won't have to wait much longer to indulge— Mayfest is just around the corner and Millennium Park's Downtown Sound has released the lineup for its June and July concert series..
This summer's performers include Brooklyn-based ensemble San Fermin, who play Lincoln Hall next week; cumbia-fusionistas OndatrĂ³pica; and Jamaican icons The Mighty Diamonds. There will be lots of local talent featured, including Andrew Belle and Birds of Chicago on the third night of the series and Third Coast Percussion have the June 25 spot. If you;re feeling a bit nostalgic, you can even see Chicago transplants Poi Dog Pondering on the last Monday in June.
In the past Downtown Sound shows were on Mondays only, but the series has been expanded to include Thursday concerts this year. Shows start at 6:30 p.m., except for the July 9 Judah & the Lion show which will start at 8 p.m. So dig out your picnic baskets and blankets and check out the complete lineup below.
