City Hall has planned a citywide Day of Service on Saturday May 16, to kickoff off a weekend of events preceding the mayoral, city clerk, treasurer and aldermanic inaugurations on May 18.
The Saturday day of service will include events such as painting schools, cleaning up vacant lots and picking up trash in parks in all 50 wards. The details on those service projects will be announced this week. Meanwhile, interested community members can sign up ahead of time and indicate their ward preference here.
In a press release Monday from the Mayor’s Office, Emanuel said:
“The inauguration is a time to reflect on the hard work we’ve done, but also to look ahead to the opportunities we have as a city. I look forward to joining Chicagoans for a weekend of activities, including opportunities for community service and entertainment in neighborhoods across the City, and then sharing my thoughts on how we can continue to come together to make our City the best place to get a great public education, find a good-paying job and raise a family.”
Aside from a morning of community service, the city is hosting its third annual “Night Out in The Parks” that Sunday, May 17. The schedule will be announced this week and is expected to include dance, theatre and other arts events in neighborhoods throughout the city.
The official 2015 inauguration is on May 18 at 10:30 a.m. and is open to ticket holders. The public can request free tickets here. Unlike Emanuel’s first inauguration in 2011, which was held outdoors at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, this year’s ceremony will be held indoors at the Chicago Theatre (175 N. State St.) Following the official ceremony, Mayor Emanuel will hold an Open House on the 5th floor of City Hall from 2 to 4 p.m.
