Baby Kangaroo, Four Baby Goats Stolen From Unlocked Wisconsin Zoo

A baby kangaroo and four baby goats have been missing from a Wisconsin zoo since Wednesday morning—with the kangaroo presumed to have been snatched straight from its mother's pouch.

The Outagamie County Sheriff's Department is investigating it as a theft, but has no leads, according to local news reports. Greenville's The Special Memories Zoo, about 200 miles north of Chicago, opened for the season last weekend with the loss looming over zookeepers, who say the baby kangaroo—called a joey—is not likely to live outside its mother's pouch and could die if it isn't returned in a couple days.

Dona Wheeler, the zoo owner, says the shelter wasn't locked, but has never experienced a theft before. She is now keeping the facility locked and adding security cameras.

Zoo keeper Gretchen Crowe just wants the thief to bring the babies back:

“They’re not easy animals to take care of. It’s not like a dog. You just can’t put it in the kennel and put a dish of food in front of it. They need special care ... If you took them, just bring them back. I mean, our main concern is the animals. We just want them to be healthy. We want them back where they belong."
