If you're a lover of Italian wine, here's an event you don't want to miss. On Monday, June 8, Aldo Zaninotto, owner of Osteria Langhe at 2824 W. Armitage Avenue, welcomes his mentor in Piemontese wines, Luca Currado, winemaker and owner of Vietti.
This revolutionary producer of Piemontese wines was founded in 1919 by Mario Vietti who sold most of his production in Italy. In 1952 Alfredo Currado, Mario's son-in-law, began to export Vietti wines to the United States. Around this time he also began to select and vinify grapes from single vineyards, which at the time was a radical concept for Barolo. Today practically every vintner in Barolo and Barbaresco bottles single vineyard wines. Alfredo is also credited with the rediscovery of the nearly lost variety called arneis. Now arneis is the most famous white wine from Roero, just north of Barolo.
On Monday evening, guests of Osteria Langhe will have three different opportunities to taste and explore Vietti wines. Between 5:30 and 10 p.m., Vietti wines will be available by the glass, bottle or flight during dinner hours. Prices vary by wine, while the flight of four wines will cost $25.
From 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Currado will conduct tastings at the bar guiding guests through several Vietti wines including arneis, Barbera d’Alba “Tre Vigne,” 2013 Dolcetto d’Alba “Tre Vigne,” Barolo “Castiglione,” 2011 Barolo “Ravera” Monforte and others. Cost for this guided tasting is $15, which is waived if you dine there that night. Guests will also be able to place orders for any of the wines poured through Perman Wine Selections.
The main event of the evening takes place at 8:30 p.m. when 12 lucky guests will have the opportunity to dine with the winemaker. Osteria Langhe Chef Cameron Grant will prepare a four-course meal paired with special selections of rare Vietti wines chosen by Currado. Cost for this one-of-a-kind opportunity is $195.
Reservations are required for all three events and can be made by calling Osteria Langhe at (773) 661-1582.
