After spending the last three months in a Baltimore halfway house, former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. could be headed back to Chicago as early as June 22.
Jackson, who represented the South Side of Chicago in Congress from 1995 to 2012, plead guilty in 2013 to spending $750,000 of campaign funds for personal use, spending that money for home improvements, luxury clothes and celebrity memorabilia. He began his 30 month prison sentence in October of 2013, a term which was shortened by about three months for good behavior. Since March 26, he has resided in a Baltimore halfway house.
Now Jackson will be eligible for home release beginning June 22, according to the Chicago Tribune. The Bureau of Prisons, which has jurisdiction over Jackson, was unavailable for comment, as they do not announce the status of prisoners until they take effect. He will be released from custody on September 20, 2015.
One month after Jackson is released from custody, his wife, Sandi, a former Chicago alderman, will be required to surrender to the Bureau of Prisons, according to the Tribune. Mrs. Jackson plead guilty in 2013 to filing falsified tax returns and was sentenced to one year in prison, which the judge determined would be served after Mr. Jackson finishes his prison sentence so that both of their children's parents would not be in prison at the same time.
Under Jackson's home release, he will remain under supervision of the Bureau of Prisons. He will be required to receive permission in order to leave the house, be accountable for out-of-house movement 24 hours a day, be subject to spot checks and hold a job, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
