An Elmhurst woman and her mother are in police custody after allegedly stabbing their family cat to death.

The mother, Kelly Palermo, 50, was at the home of her daughter, Samantha Palermo, 21, Wednesday night when she became "angry" with the family cat, the Chicago Tribune reports. According to a police news release Kelly proceeded to hold the cat while her daughter repeatedly stabbed the animal.

The report states that, eventually, Kelly's 14-year-old son wrestled the cat away from his mother and called 911, but Kelly stole it back and again worked with her daughter to end the cat's life. When can only imagine the issues the 14-year-old will have to deal with from his childhood.

In a statement, DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said:

"The allegations in this case are beyond disturbing. The very idea that two adults would work in tandem to kill a helpless family pet is sickening."

Bond was set for each of the women at $125,000. As a condition of their bond, the women were "ordered not to possess any animals should they post bond." They are scheduled to go before a judge again in early July.
