Weekend Playlist: Soundtrack Tribute To The Dissolve

By Sophie Day in Arts & Entertainment on Jul 11, 2015 6:00PM

The Internet is still reeling from the news that The Dissolve is no more just as the two-year anniversary comes and goes of the Chicago-based film review site. There have been numerous euologies and in memoriams posted online as well as an interview with founding members Scott Tobias and Keith Phipps.

We here at Chicagoist ran a farewell written by yours truly and we were in good company locally as Roger Ebert's widow, Chaz, posted a heartfelt piece on her blog.

The Dissolve was always my go-to source when I was trying to decide what movies to check out, and as a weekend of new releases stares me down I am at a loss for where to turn for suggestions. From recent films to older titles, the writers at The Dissolve always offered insightful critiques that were accessible to all without being dumbed down. The love they had for movies was palpable in their reviews, think pieces, lists and short-lived podcast.

One of the touchstones of the site was their "Essential Viewing" category—an ever-expanding list of the movies that were absolute necessities for cinephiles of all stripes. This weekend, our playlist offers a selection of music from just a few of the movies that earned the golden film icon.
