Midwestern emo/post-rock stalwarts The Appleseed Cast may only have frontman Chris Crisci nowadays, with the rest of the original members scattered around doing various projects, but the band is in a celebratory mood as they tour around the country for the 15th anniversary of their seminal album Mare Vitalis.

Mare Vitalis was released in 2000 when I was still in middle school and remember putting off homework to stay up all night wasting time on Purevolume, where I discovered bands like Mogwai, Tortoise, Explosions in the Sky, and of course The Appleseed Cast. While writing this, I revisited the album Mare Vitalis and I was struck by its sparse rawness, reminded of awkward attempts to find a sense of community and belonging somewhere I didn't quite fit in.

Dads were scheduled to open for the show at Subterranean this Tuesday, but pulled out because it seems like they’re exhausted from touring which is a disappointment because I really enjoy them, but is also entirely understandable.

The Appleseed Cast performs with Adjy, Annabel and Coaster Tuesday, July 21, at Subterranean, 2011 W. North St. This is a 17+ show and the doors open at 7 p.m. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $13.50 online and $15 at the door.
