The News & Documentary Emmy nominations are out this week and True Trans with Laura Jane Grace, the AOL original series featuring the new-ish Chicago resident and frontwoman of the band Against Me!, has won a nomination.

The series was nominated in the category New Approaches: Arts, Lifestyle, Culture. True Trans features the stories of the punk singer and other transgender people, bringing more visibility and understanding to the community.

Laura Jane Grace came out as transgender and began identifying publicly as female in 2012. Subsequently, she released a 2014 album with Against Me! called Transgender Dysphoria Blues, originally written from the point of view of a fictional transgender prostitute. Music from the album, including the hit "True Trans Soul Rebel," is featured in True Trans.

In an October 2014 interview with The Guardian, Grace said she’s committed to being a transgender public figure:

“As trans people become more part of the culture, people learn to accept it,” she said. “I want to put myself out there, I want to make connections, I want to learn and if someone can get something out of my experience, I’m OK with that, too.”

True Trans debuted in October 2014 and is directed by Austin Reza and produced by Nate Hayden for AOL Studios.
