Standup comedian and former Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney is returning to Chicago to perform in a sold-out show this week for a serious cause.

The funnyman is scheduled to perform a full set this Thursday night at Park West in support of nonprofit Better Government Association. This is an unexpected turn for the rising star comedian. Mulaney is known to focus on keen observational humor and his sets, riffs and most recent self-titled sitcom are usually centered around his own life rather than politics.

The Better Government Associate or BGA tackles many of the least humorous aspects of the Chicago political machine. The organization functions largely as a watchdog organization and frequently concentrates on exposing corruption and fraud in Illinois' often-tempestuous government. No word yet if this upcoming appearance will be a change in material for Mulaney, who most recently visited Chicago in May in two sold out shows at The Chicago Theatre. Though we're sure his time spent in the SNL writer's room surely has prepared him for a political joke or two.

Tickets for the event sold out quickly at $75 a pop, according to BetterGov.org.
