Adults-Only Camp Coming This Month, For the Price Of A 4-Star Hotel

Ahh the smell of bug spray, the roasting of marshmallows, the restless nights in sleeping bags. The booze-filled happy hour?? Yep, this is not your kids’ summer camp. Rather the Chicago Parks Foundation and Chicago Park District are giving adults a taste of the great outdoors this month with a 21-and-over, one-night-only urban camp-in at Northerly Island that’s free of counselors.
The event, co-hosted by Chicago Reader, takes place overnight August 21 into the morning of August 22 and was created “specifically for young professionals who want to get back to nature in their own backyard,” which sounds so zen, but here’s the kicker—it’s expensive as hell.
Prices range from $250 for a 2-person tent to $750 for a 6-person tent (or basically half your rent money for one night). Yeah it’s nice that they set up the equipment for you and the money goes back to park programs, but it would be much cheaper to just fall asleep on a park bench and get almost the same experience. Almost.
Actually this event has a pretty fun roster of activities including a comedy hour, a s’mores bar, a midnight showing of “Wet Hot American Summer,” and sunrise yoga in the a.m. on the 22nd. Besides the tent, the cost also supplies a survival kit with bug spray, sunscreen, a koozie and a flashlight, though you are advised to BYOS, or bring your own sleeping bag.
