Gun violence claimed the lives of two Chicago men from Friday night to Monday morning, and led to at least 43 others wounded, according to authorities.
This summer's gun violence is up over last year's, according to reports, and homicides have surged. There have been at least 1,714 shootings so far this year, compared to about 1,500 by this time last year. Chicago authorities have logged at least 281 homicides through Monday, compared to just over 240 by this time last year, according to a Tribune analysis of police data.
Two men died of gunshot wounds this weekend. The first, Tori Williams, 17, was killed Friday night in Englewood by someone in a white Cadillac, the Tribune reports. A 32-year-old man was killed Sunday night in an attempted robbery, police told the Tribune. The man, identified by relatives as Marquise Mitchell, was driving his car on South Kildare Avenue when someone on a bicycle pulled out a gun, said this was a robbery, and opened fire when he tried to drive away.
The number of shootings was relatively high this weekend (there were at least 40 shootings logged last weekend), with at least 23 people shot overnight Friday to Saturday, 13 shot overnight Saturday to Sunday morning, and 9 shot last night, but all but two were non-fatal, according to authorities. The youngest people shot this weekend were a 12-year-old boy shot in the leg and a 15-year-old boy shot in the buttocks Saturday night in West Englewood, according to the Tribune.
Gun violence is known to surge during the city's warmest months of the year. This summer has been no exception, with over 64 shootings recorded during July 4th Weekend alone.
