Frankie Knuckles Mural Needs A Home And Rogers Park Is A Top Contender

The Frankie Knuckles memorial mural in Logan Square was removed last week, much to our dismay.

The building where it was located had water damage, the mural had to be covered over with cement. On Friday, the Tribune reported that the artists behind the mural are seeking a new home for it and that Rogers Park is a leading contender.

"We want to properly locate this thing,” Michael Tupak told the Tribune. Tupak is one the artists behind the Knuckles mural and the one who recently launched a GoFundMe to help pay for a new mural in the aftermath of the first mural’s unfortunate removal. The GoFundMe was seeking $2000, and as of Monday morning has raised $2,025 and counting. Tupak says that extra money raised will be donated to the Frankie Knuckles Foundation, a non-profit educational and cultural organization. It is unclear whether the Frankie Knuckles Foundation is separate from the Frankie Knuckles Fund, a fund started by Elton John last year to work with black men at high risk of HIV around the world.

Tupak plans to meet with Mile of Murals, a public art collective located in Rogers Park, later on this week to discuss further plans. Tupak says the plan is to recreate the original mural and use any extra space accordingly.
