Second City has canceled all performances through Sept. 6 in order to continue cleaning up the theater following a devastating fire next door. Crews worked all weekend to clean and restore the space but Second City wants to finish the work before shows (hopefully) resume on Sept. 7, the theater said in a statement.

An extra-alarm fire tore threw the improv comedy theater's offices at 1612 N. Wells St. in Old Town last week. The theaters were safe but the lobby and common spaces sustained some water and smoke damage.

The Second City Training Center hopes that classes at Piper's Alley will resume on Sept. 2. Reps said they will update students on Tuesday afternoon.

Second City is planning on thanking the firefighters and paramedics who saved the theater by putting on a free show for them.
