An Urbana woman accused of killing her ex-boyfriend's puppy by placing it in a 300-degree oven is being tried by a jury of current and former pet owners.
Kinny Redmon, 24, is facing animal torture and aggravated cruelty charges, according to the Champaign News-Gazette.
The six-person jury all said they could remain impartial on Tuesday and Assistant Public Defender Stephanie Corum didn't object to the selection, the Urbana-Champaign paper reports.
Redmon's ex-boyfriend Dimarrio Zander said that he found the dog in the oven after he received a call telling him to, "Go get your dog out of the oven, bitch."
Zander found his puppy dead in the oven with the back of a chair wedged under the oven door. He called 911 around 12:30 a.m. on June 4 and said, "I just got home and the mother of my child broke into my house and put my puppy in the oven."
He had kicked Redmon out of the house a couple days before the incident after fighting about parenting their daughter. Since they have a child together, he is concerned about a possible sentence for Redmon.
"She"s the mother of my child. Of course, I don't want to see anything bad happen to her," Zander said in court.
Redmon had been cruel to the puppy about a month before.
"She thought I was paying more attention to the dog than her. She picked it up and threw him across the room," Zander said in court.
