Robbers have been posing as Uber drivers around Chicago's North Side and robbing their passengers, the Chicago Police Department said in a crime alert.

The alert warns of two black men who have been targeting Uber passengers by approaching people who have used the Uber carsharing app to order a ride. In at least two incidents, the men reportedly robbed the Uber users after they got into their car, taking their belongings and credit cards. The men were driving a 4-door Chevy Impala, police said.

One incident was reported on Sept. 13 in the 1500 block of North Wells Street in Old Town, and a second was reported on Sept. 19 on North State Street.

Police gave out these safety tips to Uber users:

  • Confirm your driver's name, photo and license plate before getting into the car.

  • Tell friends and family your planned departure time and route.

  • Do not get in a car with more than one driver; it is a violation of Uber's policy.

  • Contact customer service if anything seems off about the driver who comes to pick you up.
