A student at Northern Illinois University died after falling 11 stories from a dorm window on Saturday night, authorities say.

The DeKalb County coroner's office tells the Chicago Tribune that the office was called in at 10:25 p.m. Saturday night. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday morning. The student was a male but his identity has not been released, since his family had not yet been notified.

Eric Weldy, Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management released a statement, saying that the window screen in the 11th floor dorm had been removed:

To members of our university community: I am saddened to share that on late Saturday evening, I was notified that a student had removed the window screen and apparently fell from the 11th floor at the Stevenson Towers residence hall on the NIU campus. The student was transported from the scene to Kishwaukee Hospital but passed away from injuries a short time later. I and the entire university community are deeply saddened by this tragic news.

Weldy added that counseling would be available to members of the university community affected by this death.

The Stevenson Towers consist of four 12-story towers, and they are located on the western edge of the campus.
