Ten people were injured in crashes on both sides of the I-57 early this morning on the Far South Side.
The first crash happened on the northbound I-57 near 119th Street at 2:30 a.m. Monday morning, WGN reports. Police said an SUV rolled over, causing a chain reaction. A pick-up truck landed on top of the SUV. An ambulance passing by stopped to help but ended up getting rear-ended by another vehicle. Two other cars in the southbound lanes were involved in a crash when traffic slowed to gawk at the pile-up around 3:20 a.m., according to NBC.
Eight people were injured in the northbound lanes, and two people were injured in the southbound lanes, the Tribune reports. Five of the ten were seriously injured.
It looks like alcohol was a factor in the crash involving the car that rear-ended the ambulance, Illinois State Police Sgt. Bridget Gilgenberg told the Tribune.
All the lanes were reopened at 4:15 a.m.
