Seeing Hillary Clinton introduce Miley Cyrus and The Flaming Lips' musical collaboration on last weekend's Saturday Night Live debut was surprising, but not as surprising as the news that immediately followed. Cyrus and the band of darkly merry freaks from Oklahoma are hitting the road together next month and Chicago will be their first stop.
Pop divas taking career detours into the indie world is nothing new—remember Kylie Minogue forsaking disco for a spell to write with Nick Cave?—but Cyrus' team up with The Lips actually feels natural and off the predetermined path. We've long maintained Cyrus is far more in control of her career trajectory than people give her credit for, and her collaborations with Wayne Coyne and his coterie have always felt unforced to these ears.
According to Cyrus' website, the tour opens in Chicago at The Riviera on Nov. 19, but no ticket information has been released yet. According to Rolling Stone, all tickets for the tour go on sale on Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. local time, but we have requests out to both bands' management to confirm that. We can say with reasonable certainty fans shouldn't expect a repeat of the Bangerz tour—we're guessing there will be no old school partying in the U.S.A. on these dates.
