Traffic Warning: Lake Shore Drive And Jane Byrne Interchange Closures Are Looming

By Kate Shepherd in News on Oct 16, 2015 9:20PM

Expect a traffic apocalypse over the next few days when portions of Lake Shore Drive and the Jane Byrne interchange close for construction.

A resurfacing project on North Lake Shore Drive between Grand and North Avenues will begin on Monday, the Chicago Department of Transportation announced in a statement. The first phase will close two lanes of northbound traffic between Grand and North Avenues, with work mostly taking place on weekends and overnight.

The project will take about four weeks to complete and it will be coordinated to minimize any impact on Cubs home playoff games next week. Single lane closures will not be scheduled during the games or over Thanksgiving weekend. The portion of Lake Shore Drive between Walton and the south curve of Michigan Avenue will be paved during two overnight closures and drivers will be advised to take a detour.

Fortunately this is the final weekend of Jane Byrne closures, weather permitting.

Here's what will be closed and when from the Illinois Department of Transportation:

-The outbound Eisenhower (I-290) at the Byrne Interchange will close at 10 p.m. Friday.
Traffic can still access the I-90/94 exit ramps. A detour will direct traffic to the outbound
Dan Ryan and the 18th Street interchange to access the outbound Eisenhower via the
inbound Dan Ryan.

-The inbound Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) between Ohio Street and Harrison Street
will be reduced to one lane at 8 p.m. Saturday. Unlike the previous three weekends of
closures, no full stops will be required during the overnight hours. All inbound Kennedy
lanes will reopen by 10 a.m. Sunday.

All of the lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday.
