Unfortunately for the Hawks, their top defenseman is out of commission for the next few weeks. Duncan Keith underwent surgery today to repair a tear in his knee and will be on the sidelines for 4 to 6 weeks, the team announced Tuesday morning.

The operation took place at Northwestern Memorial Hospital downtown and was performed by Blackhawks head team physician Dr. Michael Terry.

"Duncan underwent successful surgery today to repair his right knee meniscal tear," Terry said in a statement. "The surgery was successful and we expect him to return to full hockey activities in approximately 4 to 6 weeks."

The injury had been bother Keith for a while, Coach Joel Quenneville told reporters.

The team had already been looking for more depth in the defense line to help Keith, according to the Tribune. They should be able to go over the salary cap to sign or trade for another player since he will probably be placed on the long-term injured reserve list.

The Blackhawks take on the Florida Panthers next at the United Center on Thursday evening.
